In my September article, I asserted that this year could be a year of change in schools if each reader did something new or different – just one thing – to create or strengthen the place and voice of parents in their children’s schooling. I invited you to let me know of the one thing you did and the impact you felt it made. Stories shared with me give us reason for celebration and make clear areas in which we have much work yet to do. Welcoming and Hospitality Lori Hepp is a pre-Kindergarten and kindergarten teacher at St. Frances School in Saskatoon, SK. To invite parents into her classroom, to invite them to linger, Lori created a welcoming space with a chesterfield and coffee table inside the entrance of her classroom. She set up a stand with a coffee pot and supplies so parents can enjoy a cup of coffee while they spend time in her classroom. A tablecloth, lamp, baskets, fresh flowers in a vase, decorative items tell the parents their presence is important to Lori and the children; it tells them they hold an integral place in the life of the classroom.
