We are just a few days into the 2008-2009 school year. We can still feel the energy and anticipation of a new beginning and smell the freshness of paint and floor wax applied during the summer. Is there any reason to believe this school year will be different than any other? Is there any reason to believe there will be greater engagement of parents in our schools and in the teaching and learning that happens there?

This website has been designed and developed by Grant Mucha of Degrama. I really want to thank Grant for his advice and expertise during the development process of this website. When we began, I knew what I wanted the website to do, I just didn’t know how to do it. Grant has introduced me to so many possibilities for navigation, linking, tags and formatting. The possibilities have been quite exciting! You will see that our photos are being shared through Flickr and our videos through YouTube. We are trying some means of dissemination that, we hope, will enable us to reach a wider audience and create a more diverse community with whom to sustain a rich conversation about the place and voice of parents on school landscapes.

Commenting is open on Flickr, YouTube, and various Articles on DebbiePushor.com.
If you have comments or responses you would like to share about navigation or other elements of the website design, please feel invited to contact Grant (grant@degrama.com). We’d love to hear from you so our website can continue to grow and develop.

Here’s a quick exercise to try at home. Close your eyes and visualize walking into your school. What do you see? Where are the parents and what are they doing? Take your time. Really think about it. Now imagine being in a room full of parents, all focusing on this same thing, together. The place is the Stong Dining Room, York University, and the person leading you through this exercise is Professor Debbie Pushor from the University of Saskatchewan.

“She’s a breath of fresh air,” says Mary-Lee Halverson, a long-time parent activist who has been corresponding with Pushor for several years and attended last weekend’s parent conference. “She ‘gets it’ because she sees a role for parents that goes way beyond where it is right now.” But it’s up to Ontario’s school system to decide if it’s ready to breathe in something new.
