Early Childhood Education

EDUC 498 is an elective course in which teacher candidates have the opportunity to explore current issues and trends in early childhood education. As a frame for the course, I ask teacher candidates to challenge the prevailing “school readiness” model, exploring instead what might be done to prepare schools and teachers to welcome and respond to the needs of the children and families they are meant to serve. Themes I have addressed in the course include such foci as an image of the child, the teacher, and the parent; an emergent curriculum; creating a rich and educative environment for young children; children’s, parents’ and teachers’ place in the curriculum; teacher identity in an interagency framework.
